Scanning recent media reports, we’re beginning to see some weak signals that a nascent economic recovery may have begun, or at least, that the worst appears to be over. But what will the direction be going forward?
In our view, many governments and companies in North America and Europe seem to be pursuing a kind of static ‘hold your breath’ strategy, or, when action is taken, focusing on (still more) cost-cutting, ‘stimulus’ funding and other incrementalist efforts. The sheer depth of the economic crisis, however, suggests 1) there may not be a speedy return to ‘business as usual’ and 2) that a deeper reconsideration of fundamental assumptions and business models, particularly for larger organizations—both public and private—may be in order. And it is here, we believe, where entrepreneurship can help, with new ideas, new research, and a passion for making a positive difference.
In this caucus, we will bring together entrepreneurs, researchers of entrepreneurship, members of the positive organizational scholarship, action research and other research communities to co-construct new ideas and reinforce connections among those who, long before this year’s conference, have always ‘dared’ to care, and for whom purposes, personal passions and research have always been closely intertwined.
Organization and output
After a short intro by the organizers, we will have round table dialogues, organized by topic—some determined in advance, and others as nominated by participants. Tentative topics include:
- passion for breaking the bureaucracy: corporate entrepreneurship, building a coalition for new products and services
- passion for surprise: opportunity recognition, mindfulness, intuition, bricolage
- helping the dream come true: entrepreneurship support/incubation
- passion for entrepreneurship: effectuation and the creation of new ventures
- passion/affect/emotions and entrepreneurship
- passion and social entrepreneurship
The organizers, and others who have agreed in advance, will ‘lightly’ facilitate these dialogues—i.e. form and content of the dialogue remains open—and summarize key points for later distribution to all those in attendance, via this blog.
